Connect Claude and ChatGPT via MCP

Connect Commslayer to Claude or ChatGPT. Manage tickets, update AI guidance, and write help articles through conversation.

Want your AI agent to handle more conversations? Once you're connected, follow Build and improve AI agent guidance with an AI assistant. It walks you through finding what to automate, writing guidance, and testing it on your real past conversations.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets AI assistants connect to external tools. Commslayer's MCP server gives Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants that support MCP, such as Claude Code and Codex, direct access to your helpdesk.

Before you start

Paid plans required: Claude Pro or Team. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Team.

Any team member can connect. You don't need to be an administrator. What your assistant can do depends on your Commslayer role. Reports, handover insights and automations need a manager or administrator. So do writing help center articles and changes to inbox settings, AI actions and AI agent settings. Handover insights also need a paid plan. Agents can work with conversations in the inboxes they have access to, and with guidance, the playground, canned responses, macros and labels.

Included in every plan on our pricing page, Free too. There is nothing to switch on in Commslayer and no token to create.

Use Claude. ChatGPT technically works but is almost unusable for complex tasks. Claude handles helpdesk work far better.

You are all set! ChatGPT asks for permission the first time you use Commslayer tools in a conversation.

Check the connection

You type your requests in your assistant. Open a new chat in Claude or ChatGPT and ask:

What inboxes do I have in Commslayer?

If it lists your inboxes, you're connected. From here you type what you want in plain language.

Ready-made prompts are in Settings → MCP under Example prompts. Each has Copy prompt, Open in Claude and Open in ChatGPT. Administrators see this page in the settings menu.

What you can do

To build and test AI agent guidance step by step with your assistant: Build and improve AI agent guidance with an AI assistant →

Conversations

  • Search and filter by status, date, labels, or channel

  • View full history with AI agent activity

  • Resolve, snooze, or reassign

  • Add or remove labels

  • Write a reply draft for your team to review, or send a reply or a private note

  • Answer a Facebook or Instagram comment privately by DM, or a Judge.me review by email

  • Merge duplicate conversations and undo a merge. Merging the customers too needs a manager or administrator

Help center

  • Create articles from customer questions

  • Turn support conversations into documentation

  • Publish directly (managers and administrators)

AI agent configuration

  • View and update guidance rules

  • Create guidance for specific scenarios

  • Manage canned responses

Testing

  • Test AI responses to specific conversations

  • Batch test guidance changes

  • Validate before enabling

Reports (managers and administrators)

  • Pull conversation, agent, team, CSAT and AI agent reports

  • Get numbers for each day, split by inbox, channel, agent, team, label or contact reason, and add them up for any period you need. Up to 92 days per request.

Example prompts

Find automation opportunities:

Look through our last 200 conversations. Find patterns where customers ask similar questions that the AI agent could handle but doesn't. Suggest new guidance rules.

Write help articles from conversations:

Review recent conversations and find topics we should document. Ask me questions about anything you need to know, then create the articles.

Audit AI knowledge for conflicts:

Review our AI agent's guidance rules, canned responses, and help articles. Find conflicts or inconsistencies where different sources give different answers.

Find ad hooks from comments:

Look through our Meta inbox comments from the last 30 days. Find patterns: what objections come up? What questions do people ask? What praise do they give? Use their exact words to suggest new ad hooks.

Limits

  • Messages read: 20,000 per account per day, shared by everyone on the account

  • Changes: 60 per minute per account

  • Results per page: 50 max

  • Total results: 500 max per conversation list

  • Batch tests: 10 conversations per run

Common problems

  • The connector shows as connected but returns nothing, or lists no tools. Remove the Commslayer connector in your assistant, add it again and sign in. If you belong to more than one Commslayer account, choose the account on the sign-in screen. Older connections that were made without choosing an account need this once.

  • You work in more than one Commslayer account. One connection works in one account. Ask your assistant Which Commslayer accounts can I connect? It lists each account with its own server URL. Add that URL as a separate connector.

  • "Insufficient role." Your Commslayer role doesn't allow that action. Ask an administrator to change your role in Settings → Agents, or have a manager or administrator connect.

  • Your integration token is rejected. The MCP server signs you in with your Commslayer login and doesn't accept integration tokens. For scripts and server-to-server work, use the API: Where to find your API key (integration tokens).

  • "Daily message access limit reached." Assistants can read 20,000 messages a day per account, and the count starts over the next day. Ask for samples instead of every conversation. If you often need more, contact support from the chat inside the app.

Security

  • OAuth authentication. No tokens to manage.

  • Access scoped to the account you choose when you sign in

  • Removing someone from your account revokes access immediately

  • Your role decides what the assistant can see and change. Administrators see every inbox. Managers and agents see conversations in their own inboxes only.
